Folly Beach, often called the Edge of America, is reached by Folly Road across the Folly River from James Island. Center Street runs to the Folly Beach Fishing Pier, the east end looks out toward the Morris Island Lighthouse, and a beachfront park fills the far west end.

Many Folly houses stand on pilings, with outside stairs, decks and storage underneath, and plenty of them are rentals or weekend places. Bathrooms and kitchens here take a beating from sand, wet swimsuits and humidity, and the decks and railings take the sun and the salt.

Between the beach, the Folly River marsh and Lighthouse Inlet, nearly every house on the island sits within a few blocks of salt water.
