West Ashley grew outward from the river after World War II. Close in, near Avondale, Byrnes Down and Windermere, you find brick ranch houses and split-levels from the 1950s and 1960s. Farther out, along Glenn McConnell Parkway and toward Carolina Bay, the subdivisions are much newer. Charles Towne Landing, the West Ashley Greenway and historic Ashley River Road are all part of this side of the city.

The older houses usually need the most: small baths with dated tile, tight showers, galley kitchens, plaster or drywall cracks and floors that have been covered over more than once. Newer homes tend to need a primary-bath update or new cabinets.

Many ranch houses from that era sit on crawl spaces, so the subfloor under an old bathroom matters as much as the new tile on top.
